La Spaziale is not the flashiest name in commercial espresso. It doesn't have the prestige halo of La Marzocco or the Instagram following of Victoria Arduino. What it does have is a reputation for being solid, reliable, and sensibly priced — which is, for most independent cafes and restaurants, exactly what matters.
We service La Spaziale machines regularly at Bankside Coffee. So when we talk about these machines, we're not reading off a brochure. We're telling you what we've actually found when we've had the panels off.
Who Is La Spaziale?
La Spaziale is a Bologna-based Italian manufacturer that has been making commercial espresso machines since the 1970s. They occupy the mid-range of the commercial market — producing machines that are built to handle genuine cafe volumes without the price tag of the prestige tier.
The brand is well-established in the UK independent cafe and restaurant sector. You'll find La Spaziale machines in everything from small artisan coffee shops to busy restaurant chains that need reliability without a la Marzocco budget.
They produce both traditional (manual) espresso machines and automatic variants, across a range that scales from single-group machines for lower volumes up to four-group machines for high-demand environments.
The Main Models: What You're Choosing Between
The S5 — The One Most Cafe Owners End Up With
The S5 is La Spaziale's flagship mid-range machine and probably the model you're most likely to encounter in a UK cafe setting. It's available in 1-group, 2-group, and 3-group configurations. Also available in compact sizes and adaptable to take away cup spaces.
The S5 uses a multi-boiler system, which means separate boilers for steam and espresso. This matters for temperature stability and espresso quality — you're not asking the same boiler to maintain steam pressure and brew temperature simultaneously. It's one of the reasons the S5 produces consistently good espresso without requiring a specialist barista to coax it.
The S21 — Sleek Italian Design for the Modern Aesthetic
If the S5 is the dependable workhorse, the S21 is La Spaziale’s stylish update for venue owners who want modern aesthetics paired with uncompromised daily performance. Built on La Spaziale’s signature heat-exchange design with lever-operated steam taps, the 2-group S21 pairs a high-capacity 10-litre boiler with precise electronic volumetric dosing (EK). It handles peak-hour rushes seamlessly without dropping pressure or temperature.
What sets the S21 apart is its contemporary visual package and flexible footprints. It features clean, modern lines with options for integrated group lighting and backlit steam valves that draw the eye on any backbar.
The S10 — Next-Gen Tech Meets Smart Energy Efficiency
The S10 represents La Spaziale’s tech-forward step into smart, sustainable espresso preparation. Designed for high-volume coffee shops that require pinpoint control and lower operational costs, the standard 2-group S10 features a sleek "black effect" digital touch interface and built-in shot timers right out of the box.
Under the hood, the 2-group model combines a heavy-duty 10-litre boiler with advanced digital PID temperature regulation. It introduces ECO Mode to dial back power draw during slow mid-afternoon hours, alongside a temporary Boost function to handle sudden surges in demand.
What It's Like to Actually Own and Service a La Spaziale
This is where we can speak from genuine experience.
Common faults: The most frequent call-out we handle on commercial espresso machines of this type is group solenoid issues — either the coil failing or the solenoid core needing servicing or replacement. This is not specific to La Spaziale; it's common across the market. On the S5, the job is straightforward. Parts are available and the repair is predictable — typically around £60 for parts, with labour on top. It's not a machine that throws curveballs.
Parts availability: La Spaziale parts are well-stocked through UK distributors. This matters more than people realise. The nightmare scenario for a cafe is a machine sitting out of service for two weeks while parts come from Italy. With La Spaziale, that rarely happens.
Annual service: A professional annual service — cleaning, checking seals, inspecting group heads, testing solenoids, verifying boiler pressure — typically runs in a predictable range. If you're on a Bankside service package, the annual service is included. If you're paying per visit, budget accordingly and get it done once a year without fail. A machine that isn't serviced regularly doesn't fail politely.
Longevity: Properly serviced La Spaziale machines run for a long time. We've seen La Spaziale machines in regular commercial use for well over a decade. The flip side is that a neglected machine can develop problems that cost more to fix than the machine is worth. The maintenance is not optional — it's what keeps the economics working in your favour.
PSSR 2000 — What Cafe Owners Need to Know
Like all commercial espresso machines, the La Spaziale range is a pressure system and falls under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR 2000). This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation.
PSSR 2000 requires that pressure systems used in commercial settings are inspected by a competent person and that a Written Scheme of Examination is produced and maintained. For a cafe or restaurant, ignoring this is a compliance and liability risk.
At Bankside Coffee, PSSR 2000 compliance inspections are included in all our service packages. We're registered with CoffeeSafe, which means our inspections are properly structured and audited. If you're buying a machine for the first time, or if your current machine has never had a PSSR inspection, that's one of the first things we'd look at.
How Does La Spaziale Sit in the Market?
Above La Spaziale: La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino, and Dalla Corte. These machines offer superior engineering and prestige — but at a significantly higher purchase price and with higher service costs. For a specialty coffee venue or fine dining restaurant, they make sense. For a reliable independent cafe focused on margin and uptime, the extra spend doesn't always translate into better coffee for the customer.
Below La Spaziale: Expobar and similar entry-level commercial brands. These are capable machines for lower volumes and tighter budgets, but the build quality and longevity don't match the S5. If your volume justifies a mid-range machine, the extra investment in a La Spaziale typically pays back over time.
At a similar level: Fracino (British-built, good value, reliable) and Sanremo (Italian, slightly more premium positioning). Both are worth considering alongside La Spaziale depending on your priorities.
Is La Spaziale the Right Machine for Your Business?
La Spaziale suits independent cafes and restaurants that want a machine they can rely on, that won't cause administrative headaches, and that doesn't require a specialist engineer to find parts for. It's not the machine that makes a statement on Instagram — but it's the machine that still works on a wet Tuesday in November after three years of daily service.
If you're a new cafe owner looking for your first commercial machine, or an established business replacing ageing equipment, the S5 should be on your shortlist.
